圣诞又叫XMAS的原因是

“Christmas”的简写应该是“Xmas”，“Xmas”是错误的写法。那一小撇原来是“缩写”的意思，例如“donot”变成“don’t”，大家都知道；但“Xmas”是“Christmas”的缩写吗？看起来似乎就是，可是并不尽然。那个“X”就是“Christ”（基督）的缩写，典故是来自希腊字母“X”，也就是希腊字“Christos”（英语译音）的第一个字母，所以被用来代表“基督”。所以，“Christmas”的简写应该是“Xmas”（没有那一小撇）；如果有的话，还原之后就变成“Christmas”了。

一些人认为，Xmas是现代才有的拼法，意图是为了把圣诞节世俗化，去除其中包含的“Christ”，以及与之相关的基督教传统和意义。

实际上，早在中世纪时，抄写经卷的教士僧侣就用过Xmas这个缩写，16世纪时就开始广泛使用了。
